With the meeting coming up on this Monday, it’s easy to think that everyone in Concord feels like the jail project is a bad idea. However, there are many who feel differently. Here are just a few who took the time to write thoughtful letters to the editor
John W. Kennedy
Alex Rankin
Glenn H. White
Steve Medlin
Also, I was reading the latest from Carolina Journal today. John Hood had a very interesting article about how the most important function of government is law enforcement.
I’d made a similar point last year. While I don’t doubt the sincerity of those who have offered alternate designs and made other suggestions; but they haven’t adequately addressed the public safety issues. Taking a look at the record, the Board of Commissioners didn’t consider having parts of the Justice Center spread out across the county - and for good reason. Transporting inmates is costly and increases the danger to the community by not keeping them contained in what would be a state-of-the-art facility.
The letters make the point that this plan has been thoughtfully planned and based on good data and analysis. This jail project will help our local law enforcement keep inmates in an adequate facility. This is better than the overcrowded conditions in our current facility and the high cost and logistical difficulties of shipping inmates across the state. This jail project will insure that this community can continue to grow and the local government can provide safety in fiscally-responsible manner.
It’s time for our leaders to do what might seem unpopular; but what is clearly the right thing to do.
