I remember when my pals and I would go to this bar near Westport in Kansas City. We’d see the same bartender - let’s call him Bob. Like clockwork, Bob was there every evening. One evening there was this different guy. We asked him, “What’s going on?”
He said, “Oh, Bob called in sick - I got called in yesterday to fill in - I’m Justin”
So, for all you Tavern regulars - “Hi, I’m Justin - I got called yesterday to fill in”
Welcome to this week’s Tarheel Tavern
From Scrutiny Hooligans: Peak Oil and Chevy Tahoe
All right. This post is this week’s Tavern “Must-Read” Special. Regardless of how you come down on the political spectrum - you have to enjoy the creativity here.
From Moomin Light: Baryshnikov and Astaire.
We find out that you can find great dancing by just stumbling around Google.
From A Sort of Notebook: Slacking Off
No, you’re not completely slacking off. I thought that Jabberwocky was a Terry Gilliam film before I read your post…so somebody got edumacated.
From Ogre’s Poltics and Views we find that he has been let out and is live-blogging from the NC Conservative Leadership Conference
OK, a really dedicated Tavern host would have all of the links from his liveblogging - but I can’t keep up. Head on down to Ogre’s and check it out for yourself. The Civitas Institute is one of a handful of Conservative organizations that put the “think” in “think tank”.
From Captivated by Mandie we find her at the 60% on a pocho in Three-Fifths Done
Mandie, does knitting work like software, where the last 10% takes 50% of the time?
From A Fine Dish:Bird Flu
Zha answers the question, “Which came first: the pandemic or the panic?”
From Science and Politics: Penguins have to rush sex - ‘quicky’ is the new norm
For folks who saw “March of the Penguins”, you’ll understand why this can be a problem.
From The Magic Schoolbus: Teaching Biology - Week 4
Bora is teaching adults Biology. No, it isn’t an excuse for him to “play doctor” with the better-looking women in the class. It’s an interesting read…with a dissected frog and everything!
From Circadiana:Ah, Zugunruhe
Zugunruhe is anxious behavior in migratory animals that are prevented from migrating. Like when you were 18 and had to leave your house. This is worth a read…even with the funny German word.
From John Norris’ High Country Conservative:The GOP is Playing With Fire
This post came out last Sunday. Mr. Norris was seeing into the future.
From Crime in Charlotte, NC:Justice system fails again
Even though it gets harder and harder to understand as the finance rules change and many of the elections go non-partisan; but we need to get better judges and DAs and we need to adequately fund our justice system
From 1492:McKinney Finally Apologizes
This story just shows that disconnection with reality is a bi-partisan thing in the US House
From Mel’s Kitchen:Oblong Oreos? What is the World Coming To?
Mel shows us that the world isn’t going to hell in a handbasket - it’s coming in a shrink-wrapped container from Nabisco. Yes, those confection fundamentialists who only believe in full immersion won’t like this article.
From Viewfinder Blues:The Unauthorized and the Bellicose
You gotta love articles whose titles alone expand your vocabulary! This article struck a nerve with me.
On a trip back from the Show-Me state (I was exiled there during a few of my college years) right during a short, Summer break. I was accosted by mall security at our own Carolina Mall in Concord while shopping for all the May birthdays in my family. He went into a critque of my driving. Even though I apologized, the guy wouldn’t relent and threatened me with *gasp* a ban from the mall. I couldn’t resist and calmly took out my Missouri Driver’s License with a Kansas City address and explained to him how a ban from the mall really wouldn’t affect me. Of course, I peppered the comments with a few well-placed explitives, observations on his oversized golf cart, and my intention to phone the stores where I was intending to spend money and a request for his name and his supervisors’ contact information.
He got back in his Honda CRV and I proceeded into the mall.
From The Liberty, NC Blog:Water Bills on the Rise
Gotta love them local blogs. Buried in this report is a great idea that more of our local governments should consider:
How about a tiered system, based on usage. This would also be a great water conservation technique, if you advised people the less water they use, the cheaper rate they’d receive. That would also mean less maintenance costs. Environmentally friendly, and Dave gets his money.
From Sister Toldjah:Media continue to obfuscate the facts on “Bush authorized leak” story
An interesting look at the continuing “Plamegate Controversery” and how it’s covered by the media.
From The Flannel Avenger:Gospel of Judah, eh?
When I first heard about “The Gospel of Judas”, I couldn’t help but think it sounded like “Katrina & Me: The Michael Brown Story”
From The Meck Deck:Of Teapots and Folkmoots
We made it! Into the Citizens Against Government Waste 2006 Pigbook of federal pork projects that is. An interesting article from Jeff Taylor at the Meck Deck.
From this humble hamlet in the NC Blog world - The Truth v. Harold Smith VII: The Rest of The Story
