I was going to get the exact numbers; but left my copy of the Concord Standard at work. Anyhow, the Jay White campaign, according to the paper, spent about $54,000. But Jay White himself didn’t spend $54,000, as Harold claimed. Check this out.
According to campaign reports, Jay White has already spent $54,000 in his campaign for the Cabarrus County Commission. Why would someone spend this much for an office that only pays $1,000 a month?
Is there a hidden agenda? Prehaps this law firm wants to get their hands back into the “pockets” of the taxpayers of Cabarrus County?
Paid for: Cabarrus Taxpayers Association, Al Johnson, Treasurer
In My Opinion … “I would not doubt that Jay White will spend $100,000 in his campaign before it is all over. It does raise the question, “Why?”
“We do know that Jay White is a member of the Hartsell - Williams -White law firm in Concord. This is the same law firm that “milked” the county for over $1,000,000 in a recent 4 year period.” Harold Smith
First off, Harold Smith gives the impression that Jay White himself spent $54,000 and then moves on to predict that he’ll spend $46,000 more in the last days of the election. Here’s the truth - Jay White loaned his own campaign about $10,000 - the rest was raised from individuals and political organizations.
According to initial reports, Jay White loaned less to his campaign than some other local candidates. So, why the fuss?
The message people should take away from this is that this scares the pants off of Harold, Coy, and their ilk. They are no longer the sole political force in some little ol’ mill town. They are not even the major political faction in the Cabarrus County Republican Party - they are the vocal fringe
Don’t believe me. Just look at the results. More moderate candidates consistently get more votes, mobilize more volunteers, and raise more money. The only reason that Cabarrus Taxpayers’ Association (CTA) candidates get votes is because they ride on the coattails of moderate, competent, Republican candidates Look at the top vote-getters in Tuesday’s election: Hartsell, White, Mynatt, Poole, Carpenter, etc. Most of whom have been targets of the CTA.
These candidates have turned out Republicans, and most Republicans I know will usually vote for other Republicans unless talked out of it. That’s the best way to explain why Jay White and Grace Mynatt got about the same number of votes and Coy Privette fell right in the middle of the five candidates. The Party, Jay, and Grace turned out the voters and Coy reaped the benefits.
I’m sure when this was a smaller place with simpler problems that folks like Harold, Coy, and their CTA friends did OK; but now that this community is more dynamic and diverse with more complicated problems - their philosophy merely holds us back.

[...] She might make it look easy, but Joni Juba has worked hard for the past couple of years with the new majority to help turn around the Commission to working for all of the people of Cabarrus County and not just special interests. Her election in 2004 marked the point of the Cabarrus Taxpayers’ Association’s (CTA) decline that they were truly irrelevant. Since then, the CTA has not been able to put a new person in any office anywhere in the County and the only CTA-backed candidate in office is Coy Privette - who trailed Jay White and Grace Mynatt…in spite of the CTA’s baseless attacks against Jay.
