Dole on Ford

“He ran a Rose Garden Campaign and threw me into the briar patch” - Bob Dole, remembering his experience as President Ford’s Running Mate on NPR. [Listen to the whole story here]

It was the only time during the coverage of a president’s death that I got a laugh. With his classic dry wit, Bob Dole was the only person in public life who could pull that off.

Here are some others on Gerald Ford’s death:

Sister Toldjah
Ogre
Betsy’s Page
And a cartoon on BlueNC of dubious tastefulness.

Also, the debate whether he should have pardoned Nixon continues.  Mark Tapscott covers both sides of this debate.

I’m going to take the side of Richard Reeves who wrote the book Ford, not a Lincoln: Or Why There are No Leaders in WashingtonWhile orginally skeptical of the decision, following the trial spectacles of O.J. and Monica Lewinsky - he decided that a president being dragged from courtroom to courtroom would not have been good for the nation.

My opinion, which is worth what it costs you, is from a completely historical perspective.  The entire Ford presidency took place before I was even born.
