There’ll be more on Tuesday (I forgot Monday was a holiday and, thus, there will be no substantial blogging until Tuesday).
If you would like to take action regarding Coy Privette - please e-mail me justin (at) cabarruscheapseats.com. I will forward your e-mail to a citizen whose going to hand the e-mails to Coy and the Board of Commissioners at the next meeting. I’ll also be publishing a list of individuals and organizations who have asked for Coy’s resignation on this site - if you would like your name included please let me know.
Please forward this to anyone who might care about this situation. If you want any idea about how unrepentant Commissioner Privette is about his sex crimes, check out this from the Salisbury Post:
He even joked about the situation, citing a prominent Democrat who survived a sex scandal.
“Unlike Bill Clinton, I admitted I had sex with the woman,” Privette said.
The following is a letter delivered to Coy Privette from the Cabarrus County Republican Party - his own party:
August 28, 2007
County Commissioner Coy Privette
Kannapolis, North CarolinaDear Commissioner Privette:
The Cabarrus County Republican Party Executive Board met on Monday, August 27, 2007, to address the position, if any, the Party would take regarding your continued representation on the County Board of Commissioners and the Cabarrus County Republican Men’s Club.
After discussion and motion, the Board voted decidedly to demand your resignation from both bodies, effective immediately, in light of your recent Guilty Pleas to Six (6) counts of Aiding & Abetting Prostitution in Rowan County Court.
As you have meant, and continue to mean, so much to Cabarrus County and the Republican Party, the Board feels it appropriate to outline some of the items that were and were not cited as reasons for the demand, and considerations that were made regarding such.
First, nobody denies the positive influences you have had on our County and our Party. On the local, state, and national level, you have served as one of the defining faces of Conservative policy, and all are grateful for the impact you have had.
Further, the Board’s decision was not based on a belief that your criminal behavior is indicative of who we believe you to be, as a person. All Board Members acknowledge that human beings are not perfect and are prone to sin. In this, you can feel confident that this decision was not made with punitive or judgmental intent.
There was also extensive discussion about your constituency being well represented by your replacement in the event that you resign. It is readily obvious to all what your voting base means to you, and in turn, what you mean to it. In this, you can rest assured that, upon your resignation, candidates who share the fiscal and political beliefs that you have championed will be strongly considered.
The Cabarrus County Republican Party Executive Board, among its many duties, is responsible for fostering stability in the Party and its policies. The elected officials who we support have a responsibility to adhere to the ideals that have made our Party great, and have a duty to represent other Republicans with nobility and honor. Your previous history falls in line with this, and the Board is appreciative. However, your admission of guilt to charges of Aiding & Abetting Prostitution this year does not conform to the principals your Party expects you to follow, nor does it comply with what we trust you demand of yourself.
We are sincere when we say that you and your family are being prayed for by everyone in the Cabarrus County Republican Party; frankly, you would be amazed to see who some of the most empathetic and sympathetic individuals are. But it is this feeling that causes the greatest concern among many – that someone we respect and hold so dearly fell victim to a poor decision of this nature on six different occasions.
You extended the Christian Action League the courtesy of resigning your presidency, and further stepped down from your seat on the Board of the State Baptist Convention, as you didn’t want your problems to cloud their work or damage their credibility. That should be commended.
The Cabarrus County Republican Party now demands that you consider the welfare of your family, Cabarrus County, and the Republican Party, and extend to all the same courtesy. We await your Letter of Resignation, and I encourage you to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Christopher McCartan
Chairman, Cabarrus County Republican Party

I’d like to commend the Cabarrus County Republican Party for actually taking a stand on issue surrounding Mr. Privette. Bravo!
I wish the same could be said for Union County’s Republican Party.
Recently in Union County, one of our ‘Republican’ commissioners, conspired with Democrat House Representative Pryor Gibson to legislate new commissioner voting districts that would award the Democrats one seat in perpetuity and so structure the district’s that three of the current board members would be in safe seats. Additionally, they would be allowed to appoint themselves for extended terms until 2012.
What did Union County’s Republican Party say an answer to this attempted coup d’état?
NOTHING!
Their response to questions was: “Since it didn’t happen, it’s best to forget about it.”

Mark - Yeah, the situation in Union County is unfortunate.
One thing to appreciate is that Chris McCartan has just gotten into the job as Chairman and is dealing with a Party with many factions. However, he’s been able to handle this without deepening any divisions. He’s got a lot of gifts as a leader, and he’s earned my admiration through all of this.
He gave an interesting interview to WBT yesterday morning on Keith Larson show at 11am. It’s worth a listen.
