This was an article I originally wrote a while ago, but I’ve made a couple of small changes to the site. I took out the ratings (2 people out of 1000 used them) and I added two buttons: One that will make it easier to subscribe via e-mail and another that will make it easier to subscribe via RSS.
Each week, I read the material of 70 sites without missing one article on topics ranging from local news and politics to religion to my friends websites. However, I’m willing to bet that I visit fewer sites than you do. I almost never go to a site and just browse around. It doesn’t matter though, I get a chance to read every article - from those sites that are updated every hour to those that take more than a month.
How is that possible?
The magic of RSS.
RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication”. The best way to think of it is like a tickertape. While you live your life, losers like me type into their blogs. In addition to having this text spewed in over-complicated layouts, the text is copied onto a standard, bland format. This text can be browsed using a RSS reader. You just collect the various “tickertapes” you’re interested in an cobble them together - creating a river of news. It saves tremendous amounts of time over visiting sites all of the time, and you’ll be up-to-date on any site by just visiting one site - the reader.
So, how do you get started? Well, today’s Friday Five is The Five Easy Steps To Using Google Reader As Your RSS Reader (more…)
