Last week, four other commissioner candidates - Larry Burrage, Liz Poole, Holly Blackwelder, Joy Lane and myself all squared off in a candidate forum sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. (Marcy Heirs was out of town, and the two Democrats, Wendell Fant and Archie Barnhardt, chose not to participate, since they don’t have a primary). The forum was videotaped by Cabarrus County’s Channel 22, and will be shown several times between now and the election. One airing will be Monday evenings at 9:00 PM, (Tonight’s may be delayed by the school board meeting, which is normally off by 9:00); the second airing will be at 7:00 PM on Saturdays.
For those without Time-Warner, the forum will apparently be available at www.cabarruscounty.us, follow the link to Channel 22.
Spread the word - this is the single best way for those folks eligible to vote in the GOP primary to decide who they will support on May 6.

Five million people in this country suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease. During the next administration, the number will skyrocket due to the aging baby boomer population.
We need to ask our candidates what they’re going to do about it before it bankrupts Medicare and Medicaid. North Carolina voters must ask that question now.

Well I just spent that last hour and 37 minutes watching the Cabarrus County Commission Candidates Forum over the internet since I don’t have access to Channel 22 even though I have Time-Warner Cable. Carruth is right about one thing, We all know if we like him or not from his past eight (8) service on the Commission. Furthermore, I am not empressed with the fact that some may have served in a previous elected position. School Board does nothing to prepare you for the County Commission, besides I would rather have a fresh face to politics anyway. I heard everyone dance and skip around the subject of a property tax increase. That leaves me with the impression that I’m in for a increase come January 1st. No one said anything about Senior Citizens, Crime Prevention, Social Services and the other Items that make up the other 50% of the County Budget. What about manpower for the new jail, a raise of the Sheriff’s Department and the drain that the illegal aliens have on our Jail and Social Services Department. Where’s the support for the new ICE Program that the Sheriff has started in the jail. Burrage is right about increasing the size of the County Commission. We don’t need more Commissioners or District Representation. Its not broke so don’t try to fix it. We do need to consolidate some of the services like the 911 operations, there may be other areas where this can happen as well. I hope to hear more from the candidates about the areas of County Operations other than the school system. Let the next forum be about the rest of the County other than the school system.

I wouldn’t agree that school board does nothing to prepare you for county commission. You get valuable experience in this atmosphere that helps to prepare you for being a commissioner. The school board operates and maintains a budget, just as the board of commissioners does, and has to examine contractors, plans, and venues for school location. Transfer this to the business sector and you’ve got experience, just a bit different.

Steve,Thank you So Much For Your astute attention to the Candidates Forum.I am totally in agreement about the candidates switching from school board to commissioner.
I have Addressed the plight of senior citizens in all of my articles and tried to advocate for them in the brief time allotted in the forum.
You Have addressed some crucial issues ,Social Services,Jail sherriffs salaries ,crime prevention.I have also addressed these in wtitten articles in the concord standard and cabarrus neighbors plus news 14.I have tried as best I can to allot every issue we deal with and are facing in our budget,That throwing more money at an already failure will not help.
we know that our Social services is a failure and our statistics on crime is not good. The court system is so backlogged and corrupt that only the criminals will survive.we the victims just can not afford it timewise or monetarily.
We really need to take a more stern approach to all of the above as it affects each of us regardless of our age or opinion.
