Spirited Discussion About Life in Cabarrus County, North Carolina

Cabarrus County Commissioner Candidate: Joy Lane

April 20th, 2008 by Justin Thibault · 9 Comments

A Joy Lane supporter paid us a visit on Caleb’s young voter thread and I’m moving some of the comments over here.  While Joy herself has left us a comment on a question from the 2006 election - we haven’t seen a lot of her.  She does, however, have a website.  I would suggest paying it visit and leaving any comments here.

Well to the younger generation I wish you knew what it was like to live in Cabarrus County when you could sleep with the doors unlocked and windows open at night. I wish you could remember what it was like to go to school and not fear about violence and play in the neighborhoods.

The only candidate that can remember what Cabarrus County was like back then is the one who grew up and has lived there life here.

Joy Lane is the only candidate that I know has the WHOLE county (people and business) interest not just the special interest.
The questions that should be asked of each candidate should include.

Public Safety: Fire , Emergency Services and Police protection.
Economy: Bringing business in Cabarrus County without giving the FARM away.
Schools: Improving and growing in Academic and class sizes.
Going after State and Federal funds to improve the infrastructure of Cabarrus County.

As a Fire Chief once stated ” If you take care of the INTERNAL CUSTOMER ( the Citizens) then they will take care of the EXTERNAL CUSTOMER.
JOY LANE IS THE ONE WHO CAN DO THIS.

    Bill

I’ll bet Larry Burrage can remember Cabarrus County back then. I know I can and Larry is about my age, but what are the special interests that the others are representing???I have asked all of the questions that you have asked and some of them are in the process of answering them. As far as being able to go to sleep at night with the doors and windows open, get a Glock 9 mm if you are scared in your own home, the police can’t be everywhere. Bob Carruth’s record has been pretty good so far, I think I’ll give him another four (4) years.

Personally, I prefer the Glock 23 .40 cal, but thats just my weapon of choice.

Amen to the 23! Perfect Weapon for everyone!

I totally agree actually my old USN 45 has plenty of kick and ammunition, but those should be of last resort. I wrote these comments prior to listening to the Rep. “discussion” and I can agree that Mr. Carruth’s were pretty good. I do however believe we need someone not tied to the School system in which both of those candidates appear a little “well can not make a decision.”
They appear to be followers not leaders. I KNOW, that Joy Lane is a leader and given the chance I feel she will lead Cabarrus County by listening to all the citizens and not just those who have deep pockets.

    Justin:

And quite a snazzy web site it is too. I wonder how much that cost and who’s paying for it???? She has a Concord Address but her campaign Hqs is located in Harrisburg….in an open field, according to the google search map. I am concerned about her ties to the Real Estate Industry and the appearance of a conflict of interests there. Her number one issue, according to her web site, is rudeness. She just can’t stand the rolling of the eyes and the shaking of the head so she will be the den mother to the BOC and stop all of this disagreement. Well Good Luck Joy!!!!

    She then asks:

“Q. Aren’t you just going to take the side of real estate agents, builders and developers in any question?

    A. Absolutely not! My job is my job, I have to make a living just like everyone else. I’ve been doing this job for a long time and I do it well. But…my opinions are just that, my opinions, I will be voting the Joy Lane way and no other way.”

Now I have to find out what the “Joy Lane Way” is!!!!! And where will I find this out???

She further states that her “Crackerbox” was re-evaluated and it was outrageous. I wonder if she filed an appeal with the Board of Equalization????

These and so many other questions beg to be answered by Ms. Lane!!!!!! So come on, Ms Lane, Jump in here and get your feet wet. Your public awaits!!!

Steve - As for the reval on the “crackerbox” - the county revaled her house in 2008 at $84k from $71k in 2007 - Zillow.com puts the value of the house at $101k. For comparison’s sake, my house went from $143k to $167k with a Zillow value of $172k.

According to her math - I got a raw deal on my reval (hers=80% of market; mine=97% of market); but - for some reason - I’m not complaining.

As for “rudeness” - I think we’ve seen 7 people that get along really well (Concord) can cost us dearly (Speedway). I’ll take a few eyerolls here and there.

What I’ve noticed is that there isn’t one specific issue with a solution mentioned. And from Mr. Dover - nothing substantial. Seriously, try to write a substantive resolution from what Bill or she has said…can’t be done.

This is funny though. According to some folks in the know - Bill was a major opponent of the 1/2 cent sales tax and transfer tax back in 1998. The PAC money from the Realtors that gave us the Cabarrus Taxpayers Association, and - subsequently- the problems we had now. 10 years later, Joy is backing “Pennies for Progress”…which is a sales tax with an alliterative name.

It seems to me if we had the sense to ignore the Realtors then we’d fewer problems today. What makes it a good idea to start listening to them now?

It is time for a reality check.
    1) Realtors, builders, developers are no more responsible for the growth in Cabarrus than a car dealer is responsible for congestion and wrecks on the roads. All are meeting a demand of the market.
    2) As to tax initiatives, we are all free to support or oppose any tax proposal.
    3) The revaluation was not a one year increase. It was a 4 year revaluation. More importantly, it is not the value that gets you, it is the tax rate. For years elected officials have taken advantage of revaluation years to tell the citizens, that they “cut your tax rate” and indeed they normally do. However, if you look at your tax bills (the amount you actually paid) over the last 20 years, you likely will see a pattern. That pattern being more actual dollars paid in property taxes.
    4) Why do you care where her campaign headquarters is located. You may want to check the physical location personally. Google is not always up to date on their data.

Lastly, put your guns back in your pants. If a gunshot kills you, the type gun from which it was fired becomes a moot point.

Tom - Are you saying that groups associated with developers and realtors have never lobbied for more lax development and zoning standards in this county?
