Cabarrus Filing Watch 2008: School Board Edition

July 17th, 2008 by Justin Thibault · 16 Comments

The Primaries are over - it’s time to show that we’re putting the kids first…by putting filing for School Board Candidates last.

At the midpoint of filing…here they are…your candidates for 4 four-year terms and the remaining two years of Liz Poole’s term…so far:

Republicans: incumbent: Holly Blackwelder; previous candidates: David Harrison and Lew Davidson; newcomers: Robert Tizon and Phillip C. Stevens.

Democrats: incumbent: Cindy Fertenbaugh; previous candidates: Mike Helms and Wilma King Means; newcomer: Anna Hood

Unaffiliated: incumbent: Wayne “Really, you’re running again” Williams AKA “The Commodore”; newcomer: Jan A. van Ravesteyn.

Alright, Cheap Seaters: Who do you know? Who do you like? Who do you wish would file? Who do you wish hadn’t filed?

Just so that I understand… Is this a partisan race? (i.e. is Party Affiliation visible on the ballot?)

Also, if it is a partisan race, are there any sort of primaries if more than 5 candidates file per party?

    Tony - It’s Non-Partisan; but I don’t believe in non-partisan, County-wide elections.

That’s why I included the party affiliation here. I think that non-partisan elections make it more difficult for people to understand who they are voting for.

David Harrison is running again. This time we need to elect him. I would even recommend that the School Board appoint him to the unexpired term of Liz Poole. He has served on other appointed positions including the Board of Equalization and Review where he served with great distinction during the last revaluation of the County-wide Property. Its time to get David on the school board regardless of his party affilation. His dedication to public service is unequaled in this field of candidates

    Welcome Back, Caleb…

I’ve missed Caleb around here; but he’s come back something fierce.  While I’ve always thought that coming back with ad hominem attacks with the same is a bad idea - I’ll make an exception for this gem:
    I’m actually going out…

    Mike -

Justin.. do any of them have web sites you could link to?

No, and if the past is any guide, I wouldn’t expect too much.

I know David Harrison has setup a website. It’s still in development, but you can get a preview at http://www.davidharrison2008.com

Steve and Mark, you are too kind to me. Thnx!

Welcome to fellow GOPers: Blackwelder, Davidson, Tizon and Stevens. Hope we meet soon. (Hello, also, to the Dems and Unaffiliated candidates.)

On the partisan-ness of the BoE race, of course there was no spring primary (making for a less expensive race than County Commissioner), and in November the Elections Board rules just list us (without an R or D or U beside any names).

But most of us tend to identify with one party or another.

Party affiliation does mean something, still. Voters hopefully know (from their own perspectives) what they are getting in a candidate who they can trust, and thankfully ‘R’ ususally means ‘conservative’. Those types, for myself, are pro-business and financially responsible. But we Rs have other characteristics, as well.

Example: In 1975, the little lady at the smalltown library showed this 18-year-older the voter registration form, pointed to the “Dem” box and said (as I fondly recall), “Now, sonny, you just go ahead and put a check mark right there…” As a West-Rowan descendant of farming Wilhelms and Grahams, she learned how quickly to ‘get my back up’, my eyes narrowed and in my best mule-like way… I replied ever so respectfully to my elder, “I’d rather not.”

    Thnx, ya’ll!

    David

Your party affilation means nothing as I know you and have seen the good work that you are willing to do for your constituents. If you were a Democrat, I would still vote for you as I do for Brad Riley for Sheriff. In this case its the man I’m voting for not the party. My knowledge of the person trumps the policital party every time. If I didn’t know you then the party affilation would come into play as to your attitude and demeanor toward government. I tend to be quite conservative when it comes to expenditure of tax monies. I think you will be a great stewart of our tax dollars.

Tony, the max # of “nonpartisans” who can sign up — until Aug. 1 and at $5 — is the approx. 87,000 registered voters in the Cab Schools district. They can be Reps, Dems or other parties. As of today, we’re up to 12 and can make it a baker’s dozen if you know any one else who wants to jump in. [ ; - )

    Mike, I’m on Facebook.com also.

    Thnx for your interest!

Years back, I ran for School Board when my kids were in school. I almost won. I never make that mistake again. School Board is a thankless job. You have no individual power and you catch all the hell, but many thanks to those who choose to serve. My first choice will be you. Good Luck!!!!!

Add Blake Kiger (R) of Kiger Construction to the list. Here’s his website.

Last I checked, there are 13 of us in this race. This ‘Bakers’ Dozen’ is looking like more fun than a field trip to Krispy Kreme! Carruth should know: Has the Board of Elections budgeted enough for all this ink? (Every one tune in Aug. 1 at noon to see if more jump into the fray…)
