Spirited Discussion About Life in Cabarrus County, North Carolina

Cabarrus Democrats Descend Into The Gutter

October 2nd, 2008 by Justin Thibault · 5 Comments

I’d heard rumors that someone supposedly had a tape of Jeff Barnhart saying that he was going to resign if reelected, and I chalked it up to Coy and his cronies.  Well, according to the Independent Tribune, the local Democrats are in the same gutter with Coy Privette.

Johnson’s report, obtained Wednesday by the Independent Tribune, states “Barnhart…at his first board meeting as CEO in February 2008, he again reassured the board he would run for re-election, but if elected he would set aside and the Republican Executive Committee would appoint his replacement and that everyone understood this.”

“What they do with it, I have no idea,” said Harry Turner, Democratic Executive Committee member and president of Cabarrus Senior Democrats….Turner, who sat in for the late Johnson at a political forum this week where he publicly talked about Barnhart’s reported plan, said the late Johnson has recordings of board members, to whom Barnhart has revealed his intentions to resign, talking about Barnhart’s plan.

This has holes big enough to drive a truck through here are a few:

  1. If a tape exists, why not just play the it for this Executive Board?  Who would lead with a report when they had physical evidence?
  2. The timing should raise suspicion: right on the heels of the death of the person who supposedly had this AND the fact that these are the first days of October (”October Surprise”)
  3. Jeff Barnhart’s replacement or any discussion like that concerning Jeff, Linda, or Fletcher has NEVER been discussed at a Cabarrus GOP Executive Board meeting since I was elected in 2007 - as alleged by this mindless cabal of liars.
  4. Finally, there are 22 - not 8  - people on the Cabarrus GOP Executive Board. (In the article, Harry Turner - the President of Cabarrus Senior Democrats suggested there were 8 people on our Exec Board)
  5. If Jeff decided not to run, wouldn’t it make more sense for the Cabarrus GOP Executive Board to just appoint the next highest vote-getter from the Primary…or any one of dozens of local GOPers who could whip Wayne Troutman.

It takes a few more people to run the party that leads the County in the 21st Century rather that a group of has-beens from a few decades ago.

Given this information, I’ll leave it to you to utilize Occam’s Razor.  Which situation is more likely:
  • That someone would go through a grueling primary campaign and run in the General - only to give it all up once he’s elected and the evidence for all of this is conviently unavailable.
  • That the local Democrats - so tired of getting whipped like a rented mule in local elections - are resorting to lies against a candidate to whom they have no hope of finding a credible challenger.
I’ll let you be the judge.
Also, in hoping that this isn’t true, I’m inviting all of the local democrats to deny that the Party or - in the case of candidates - their campaign has anything to do with this oafish lie.  The comment section is open to you.  Also, I would be more than happy to make this recording available to everyone here…that’s if it actually exists.

Someone has anonymously posted the recording here.

Got me with that one. I doubt such a tape exists, but I’m glad you’re calling out those who are pushing this theory. I think The Tribune should (But probably won’t), do more fact checking before they run a claim like that.

Good one Brad. Enjoyed the link.

I don’t know what the schedule is yet but check with Channel 22 for the Candidates Forum. Bob Carruth, Archie Barnhardt and I participated yesterday. We were given instructions to prepare an opening statement, three questions and a closing statement. Once we arrived we were told that there would probably be 10 or so questions. My many years of attending the commission meetings paid off (I think.) Please watch at least the beginning to get an impression of three of the four candidates. Unfortunately, the taping was at 2:15 and Wendall Fant was unable to attend because of work obligations. It would have been better if this had been scheduled so that all four candidates could participate. I am thankful that I was able to participate.

Also, each school board candidate was given 5 minutes. They each were asked to answer the same question and otherwise speak about why they are one of the top five candidates. Please take the time to watch both programs on Channel 22 prior to voting. I did not stay to watch the school board candidates but for those lesser known candidates, this will give everyone an opportunity to make an informed decision.

I believe it will also be on the web but again, I don’t know how long it will take county staff to get the shows posted.

Why should you care about both of these races.? These people are close enough to touch. We are in the grocery store, at the mall, and out and about with you. (Sorry but I don’t see the President walking down Union Street.) The federal and state races are extremely important but so are the local races and we should take time to be informed. Non-partisian (is there really such a thing?) or partisian, take the time and do the research.

Last Sunday, the Board of Education candidates were profiled in the Cabarrus Neighbors and I believe this Sunday will be the Commission candidates.

Go ASU! (I digress but I have to shout out my team against the Citadel on Saturday.)

Liz, thanks for posting about the forum. I was a little surprised myself that there turned out to be more than three questions.

I was also sorry that Wendall Fant did not get to participate. It would have been good to have all four candidates there.

As for the “issue” some members of the local Democrat elites have “dug up”, we just need to keep our eyes wide open. This election season, which has been stranger than strange, might just turn up some new political alignments that no one would have ever thought possible.

I can say one thing, however - if you are new to Cabarrus County, and wonder what is going on with Fletcher Hartsell and Jeff Barnhart, don’t. Besides being two very effective leaders, they are also two of the finest gentlemen you would ever hope to meet, who put this community first every day.

I’m really amazed that we haven’t seen anything from the local Democrats distancing themselves from this trash.
