My Criminal Justice professor, Dr. Mike Adams, is not only a brilliant mind in his field, but also a columnist for townhall.com. In what time he has left, he heads a group that fights free speech infringements against conservative viewpoints on college campuses. He has brought to light some recent actions taken by the administration at UNCW that are troubling. I urge each of you to follow the link to the article, and also to take the action that Dr. Adams asks of each of us. It is a very practical way to fight this elitist descretion of what is and is not acceptable free speech. I’m also eyeing a few ways to fight this from within the student government and student organizations, so stay tuned for more. Please help! Dr. Adams idea will only cost you $ 0.02, and it will help get the ball rolling on getting rid of an out of touch administration.

Caleb - Interesting idea. Only one problem: what, in your experience with the UNC system, makes you think they would care about blowing $100K or that they give a passing thought to financial efficiency?
I spent most of my college career there and my answer would be nothing.

True, but it has just come to my attention that The University is being sued for this little event. Plus, I know of another pending law suit that they are dealing with. Otherwise, the UNC system has probably wasted more money this year than I will make in the next 10.

FTA: “…they gave little thought to the small Confederate Flag that was displayed…”
Exactly.

Brad-
Does that comment infer that people aren’t allowed to be stupid, thoughtless or ignorant of what is P.C. or socially accepted?

Aaron - Be as ignorant as you wanna be.
Just remember, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from repercussions.

Brad-
Thanks, I’m glad I have your permission to be ignorant. Is there a certificate I can get that is suitable for framing or does it come in a wallet card I can carry with me?
Actually, you cannot have free speech and have repercussions at the same time. Sure, you can get your ass kicked by someone who’s offended but you can’t have “free” speech and then have your charter pulled and suspended for it. That’s the scholastic equivalent of being arrested, jailed, tried and imprisoned. Why can neo-nazi’s march down city streets giving the “seek help” sign and shouting adorations to Hitler but these guys can’t put a 4″x4″ representation of the confederate battle flag on their banner?
I agree that the confederate battle flag is a pretty ignorant thing to put on your banner. I agree that most Democrats have a hard time accepting the fact that it was their party that subjegated blacks for 100 years. I also agree that if some black folks were around and decided to form a posse and go beat the daylights out of them that the university might have cause for concern or intervention for safety reasons.
That didn’t happen…
So who do you prefer: Tupac or Biggie? Are you an east coast or west coast supporter?

Aaron - N.W.A. made an indelible mark on me as a teenager and I even had the pleasure to see them live in Charlotte, so I lean towards the west. I like to eat breakfast at West A Street Grill too. I’m straight outta K-town

Ah yes. NWA influenced me in my younger years too.
In the East v. West battles of the late 90’s I liked to envision myself as living in Kansas and able to listen to both sides.
I think “F&%$ the Police” is an awesome song. I liked to play it in my patrol car while parked at the corner where the dope dealers were hanging out. It kinda took away any wise cracks they could make

A policeman playing “F&%$ the Police” in his patrol car sounds like a plan from Sun Tzu’s Art of War
Wow. You have my respect sir.

Hah,
It’s hilarious you mention Sun Tzu. I read parts of it in Basic Training when I was in the Marines and when I went to drug interdiction school, the instructor suggested we read it for philisophical understanding. I re-read it, and many of his ideas worked better as a cop then they ever did in the Corps!

Here is my absolute favorite Sun Tzu declaration from the Art of War. It was my constant go to when we were planning something at the police department.:
19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable;
when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we
are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away;
when far away, we must make him believe we are near.
If you could get an entire administration of a police department to follow that one simple edict, you’d have a crime rate so low, you’d need an electron microscope to read it…
